Official council roles

Councillors

Councillors carry out a range of different duties and responsibilities:

  • representing constituents in their ward
  • making decisions in meetings of the council and its committees
  • reviewing and monitoring the performance of council services
  • facilitating public involvement in local decision making
  • developing and reviewing council policy
  • setting the council’s budget
  • carrying out a regulatory role, for example, in relation to licensing and planning matters
  • representing the council on other bodies
