Green light for new primary school campus
Plans for vacant Coatbridge High School site approved
Historic Scotland has praised plans for the new Greenhill Primary and Drumpark ASN Primary school campus in Coatbridge.
The new campus will be developed on the sandstone part of the former Coatbridge High School. Surplus buildings will be demolished to make way for a new games hall, external play area, sports pitch and parking.
Due to the architectural significance of the building, plans had to be approved by Historic Scotland.
James Turner of Historic Scotland said: "The re-use of the former Coatbridge High School as a primary school is to be greatly welcomed, giving it a sustainable and guaranteed future for Coatbridge.
"We have appreciated the opportunity of being involved in this project from its early inception, which has ensured a smooth transition through the consent process.
"From the early stages it was clear that the council's Design Team acknowledged, and celebrated, the historical, social, and architectural significance of this fine category B-listed school.
"Furthermore, the design team has introduced fresh and modern architectural features which perfectly compliment this important historic local landmark."
Council Leader Jim McCabe added: "The plans for the new Greenhill primary and Drumpark ASN primary campus look stunning. The development will go a long way to enhancing the appearance of the area and become a real asset to the community. "
