Primary school pupils from across North Lanarkshire have been commended in an annual road safety awards ceremony.

Our Safe and Sustainable Travel Team held the Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) Awards in Motherwell, with the Team of the Year being presented to Carbrain Primary School in Cumbernauld.

Second prize was awarded jointly to Ladywell Primary, Motherwell and Sikeside in Coatbridge, while third place was shared by Orchard Primary from Wishaw and St Mary's in Airdrie. Prizes were presented by Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of the Infrastructure Committee.

Top prize for the best road safety campaign went to Carbrain Primary, with Allanton Primary in second and St Bernadette's from Motherwell in third.

St Timothy's Primary in Coatbridge won the award for the best JRSO noticeboard; the team from New Stevenston Primary were runners-up and Orchard Primary took third place.

Junior Road Safety Officers work in their schools with other pupils, teachers, parents and the community to raise awareness of road safety issues. Each school has a JRSO Co-ordinator, a member of staff within the school, to support their work.

An award for the leading JRSO Co-ordinator was given to Tracy McGhee from Ladywell Primary, with the runner-up award going to Shona Byrne from Carbrain Primary and Karen Dick of Sikeside Primary in third place.

"Our young JRSOs do an excellent job in schools through the school year, highlighting the importance of road safety to pupils of all ages," said Councillor McPake.

"So it is important that we recognise their efforts, creativity and commitment through our annual awards ceremony. I have been hugely impressed with the campaigns and work all the JRSO teams have carried out and I would like to congratulate the pupils and co-ordinators on their achievements."

The awards ceremony is sponsored by Amey, the council's public private partner in roads maintenance. Fin Robertson from the company presented the prizes for the best JRSO campaign.
