Conservation areas in North Lanarkshire

As part of the commitment to regenerating the historic environment, the council has undertaken detailed appraisals of the seven existing conservation areas.

1. Victoria and Town Centre, Airdrie
2. Blairhill and Dunbeth, Coatbridge
3. Cumbernauld Village
4. Drumgelloch, Airdrie
5. Dullatur
6. Hamilton Road, Motherwell
7. Kilsyth

The council aims to establish a conservation and enhancement framework, which enhancement strategies and development management decisions can be based upon. This is in line with Scottish Historic Environment Policy (SHEP), Scottish Planning Policy (SPP) and Planning Advice Note (PAN) 71 on Conservation Area Management.

What is the purpose of conservation area designation?

  • To safeguard and enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area

What extra controls does conservation area designation apply?

  • There are tighter controls over demolition and all trees are protected. The council has to have special regard to the character and appearance of the area.

The council is also undertaking a regeneration scheme to enhance the Kilsyth Conservation Area. This includes a shopfront improvement scheme and seeks to tackle a number of derelict sites.

The development management process will seek to apply the conservation area guidance and to ensure that development is of good design quality and takes account of the local conservation context.
