The classes are grouped around three open areas which are extensions of class rooms. There is a library in the senior area. The junior doubles as a dining room and there is a spacious gym hall and stage. The nursery class was opened in 1977 and has a capacity of 50-50.

The school has a Parent Teacher Association and a School Board. Parent's evening are held on a twice yearly basis. Good relationships exist between the school, the community and all external agencies. Weekly contact with the community is an ongoing part of the nursery curriculum. The school has extra curricular activities eg badminton, athletics and netball most evenings.

It is the aim of everyone involved in St Gerard's to ensure:

  • that every child feels valued and fulfilled. We are committed to developing skills and attitudes which will enable all pupils to contribute positively to the society in which they live and to achieve their potential.
  • that the pupils develop a responsible, caring attitude to themselves and others within the ethos of a Catholic school. To develop a caring attitude to people and the environment. To foster attitudes of application and effort by providing an environment which is varied, interesting and stimulating and which will encourage the pupils to willingly participate in their own learning, now and in the future. To create a bright, happy and caring climate where the pupils will feel secure. To offer every child a broad, balanced curriculum using a variety of appropriate teaching methods and resources.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Gerard's primary normally transfer to Cardinal Newman High School.
