Townhead Primary and Nursery
Townhead Primary School is a non-denominational, co-educational, multi-cultural school providing education from Primary One to Primary Seven. In addition, there is a large 40FTE nursery class which caters for children from 3 years old.
The school was opened in 1956 and provides very good accommodation over two storey's. In addition to the nursery wing with its own outdoor play area, there are 5 classrooms, an Infant Open Area, Library, Art room, Computer suite, GP room and a Teachers' Resource room. There is a large gym hall which also serves as the dining room.
The school and nursery are taking forward the Curriculum for Excellence and empowering children to be Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors. The school and nursery have both achieved the gold award in Health Promotion and are currently working on their 3rdEco flag.
Many varied activities are offered during the course of the school day in which the children have opportunities to work independently and collaboratively. The school has established good links with the community and visits by the police, fire service, dental hygienists, chaplain, and health professionals are arranged to further enhance the children's learning. Classroom work is complemented by educational outings to places of interest. In order to further raise achievement, P7 pupils are offered a residential week at Kilbowie Outdoor Centre and Senior Pupils also have the opportunity to visit York and/or Paris. There is a comprehensive programme of after school clubs which is on offer for all pupils from P1 - P7. Pupils participate in local events and competitions such as the Speech and Drama Festival, usually with a good degree of success.
Working in partnership with parents is fully promoted. Regular newsletters keep parents informed of school life and events. Parent Support Workers offer a variety of parental workshops throughout the session. There is an active Parent Council and hardworking PTA. Parents are invited to two pupil progress meetings annually and there are numerous invitations to parents for class assemblies, Open Days, concerts and exhibitions of work.
Very good transition programmes are in place for the transfer from Nursery to Primary One and for Primary Seven to S1. Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 years so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Townhead Primary normally transfer toCoatbridge High.
Pupil roll statistics from Scottish Government census at September 2012. Rolls are subject to change throughout the session.
