Death
In this section you will find useful information on registering deaths, registering stillbirths, repatriation of bodies to Scotland, repatriation of bodies abroad, bereavement advice and support, copies of death certificates, funerals, burials, cremations and exhumations.
Registering deaths
We know that when someone dies it is a very difficult time for that person's family and friends
Repatriation of bodies to Scotland
When someone dies abroad or in England, Wales or Northern Ireland you can bring the body back to Scotland once you have received the certificate of death and an authorisation for the removal of the body from the country of death from the appropriate authorities
Repatriation of bodies abroad
Every country has its own regulations and you should check with the embassy or consulate for guidance.
Copies of death certificates
You can get copies of death certificates from a registration office.
Exhumations
It is possible in some cases to exhume or disinter human remains from our cemeteries.
Burial and grave details
We manage a number of cemeteries and churchyard burial grounds. We have burial grounds which are open, that is, provide new burial plots or lairs and those which are closed, that is, do not provide new lairs.
Memorial placement
If you want a memorial headstone it is usually arranged on your behalf by a memorial mason.
Low cost funerals
Most funeral directors should be able to supply an estimate for a basic or low cost funeral and should not be used if they cannot do so.
Independent funerals
It is often assumed, quite wrongly, that funerals can be completed only with the use of a funeral director. Although a funeral director will be invited to organise the majority of funerals, some people prefer to organise funerals themselves.
Holytown Crematorium and Memorial Gardens
This facility was built to serve the residents in North Lanarkshire, although it is also used by neighbouring areas. It is a partnership project between Dignity Caring Funeral Services and North Lanarkshire Council.
Cemeteries service fees
We operate a schedule of fees for our Cemeteries service, which is shown below and includes fees in relation to the Baby Memorial Garden in Cambusnethan cemetery.

This information is to help you understand how funeral directing operates. It will enable you to ask questions appropriate to your needs when you consider the arrangement of a funeral.
Registration of deaths - emergency arrangements
If you need to make an emergency registration outwith normal office hours you should contact the duty officer at the local police station.
Cemeteries service maintenance
Our cemeteries and churchyards are maintained by cemetery staff. Maintenance within cemeteries includes grass cutting, litter collection, interments, reinstatement, shrub beds, flower beds, trees and weed control.
