Hope Street

Designs have been prepared for a new junction layout on Hope Street next to Motherwell train station. Designs for new shared use walking, cycling and wheeling paths have also been prepared. This will make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to access the station.

New street lighting has been put at the junction.  Construction work to build the new junction and paths will start once external funding is available. It is expected that work will take place during 2026.

West Hamilton Street

The work on West Hamilton Street was complete in Summer 2025.

What's been done?

  • widened existing paths for shared use
  • improved crossing arrangements for pedestrians and cyclists
  • repaired and resurfaced the bus laybys
  • resurfaced the road

Asda to Civic Centre work

Work on the route between Asda and Motherwell Civic Centre was complete in Spring 2025.

What's been done?

  • providing shared use paths
  • providing dropped kerbs
  • changes to the junction of Watsonville Park, Oakfield Road and Cairns Street

This section will link to planned shared-use paths into Ravenscraig from Windmillhill Street and Airbles Road as part of the Motherwell to Ravenscraig City Deal project.

We plan to do more design work for active travel routes on Bellshill Road and Windmillhill Street, next to the Civic Centre.

We have funding to carry out design work on Bellshill Road in 2025 and 2026. Information on the designs will be provided when available.

What we have already done

At the start of 2023, we completed work on the first phase of the wider Motherwell Station active travel project.

This resulted in us constructing a shared-use walking, cycling and wheeling path from Motherwell Rail Station to Braidhurst Industrial Estate.

Other work we have done

In November 2021 we did work to widen the path from Merry Street at the Woodcutter pub, past the Aquatec Centre to the pedestrian crossing on Hope Street.

In 2020 we completed walking and cycling route improvements in Strathclyde Park and put up new signs between Strathclyde Park and Motherwell Rail Station.

What else are we doing in the area?

We’re working in partnership with Ravenscraig Limited to create new routes for cycling, walking and wheeling into and through Ravenscraig. The new routes will make it easier to get to neighbouring communities and improve links to facilities in Ravenscraig.
