The impact of coronavirus (Covid-19) is becoming increasingly disruptive to our lives and those of our friends and families and, understandably, this is a time of anxiety for us all.
One of the main things we can do to reduce our sense of uncertainty is to stay informed. When we understand what we are facing, and are prepared, then our distress can reduce.
The NHS has produced a managing anxiety leaflet [143kb] which provides some basic information and advice about managing anxiety during the pandemic.
You can familiarise yourself with the correct advice about Covid-19 in general, but also in relation to the area you work in using the following sources:
There are some resources and support that can offer help if you or someone you know is feeling lonely.
- The Health & Wellness Hub offers regular telephone contact with you (wellbeing checks, a listening ear). Phone them on 01698 262437 / 01698 303199 (Motherwell area) or 01236 605795 / 01698 262437 (Airdrie area).
- Time for Talking: free and available for a friendly chat anytime, day or night on 0800 970 3980
- Age Scotland: 0800 12 44 222 it's a free and confidential helpline for older people, their carers or families
- Samaritans: 116 123 it's a 24 hour free and confidential helpline. They can also be contacted by email and post.
Tips for carers
It's vital that those who look after the health and wellbeing of others find time for themselves too. Whether it's exercising at home, taking a moment to rest and relax, going for a walk, speaking to someone else or devoting some time to their hobbies, this will contribute to their own wellbeing and that of those they care for.
Parents and carers looking after children and young people can get them involved in activities and tasks such as tidying, gardening or cooking. Parent Club has some easy recipes the whole family can help make.
If you are looking after older people, this can be a good time to lend them an ear, listen to their stories or do some activities together. The Elder website lists some suggestions of activities you can try at home with older people.

- Visit Young Scot for information and mental health support for young carers.
- This guide by SAMH contains mental health advice for carers.
- The Scottish Government has also published advice and guidance for unpaid carers, highlighting the importance of having an emergency plan in place in case the main carer becomes ill.
