Clyde valley residual waste project

Improving recycling and residual waste treatment

We are the lead authority of a consortium of five local authorities - East Dunbartonshire Council, East Renfrewshire Council, North Ayrshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council and Renfrewshire Council - to deliver improved recycling and residual waste treatment.

Residual waste is waste that remains following recycling and composting activities.

Following a competitive tendering process, we have signed a contract with Viridor Waste Management. The contract is expected to be worth around £700 million over a 25 year period, starting on 1 December 2019.

The company will design, construct, finance and operate the facilities to treat waste which would otherwise go to landfill. Over 90% of the partner councils' waste will be diverted from landfill and a Refuse Derived Fuel will be produced which can be used to generate renewable energy.

Waste will be transported to Viridor's treatment facility at Bargeddie where recyclable material will be extracted and the Refuse Derived Fuel taken to the company's energy recovery facility in Dunbar.

It is anticipated that the partner councils will require to treat around 190,000 tonnages of waste. The breakdown per council can be found in the pdf icon CVRWP Key Facts [171kb] document, which also provides details of the project programme.
