World class cycling and family fun in Motherwell

Come and see the action - Tuesday 23 May

The Tour Series

One of the UK's biggest cycling events comes to Motherwell on Tuesday 23 May, with free activities for all the family throughout the day.

The Tour Series and the Matrix Fitness Women's Grand Prix take place in Motherwell for the third year in a row, with two Olympic gold medallists expected to compete.

Katie Archibald won a gold medal in the team pursuit at the Rio Olympics in 2016, also setting a new world record, and last month took gold in the women's omnium event at the UCI World Track Cycling World Championships 2017.

Ed Clancy has won a total of four Olympic medals, including three golds at the Beijing Games in 2008, London in 2012 and in Rio in the team pursuit. He has also won eight times in the Tour Series, riding for JLT-Condor.

Hosted by the council, the event starts with local school children cycling around the 1.2km town centre circuit at 12.45pm then a series of amateur races organised by Scottish Cycling from 1.50pm. Staff from local organisations including Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, North Lanarkshire Leisure, Mears, Robertson Partnership Homes and the council will take part in a corporate relay race at 3.50pm.

The Matrix Fitness Women's Grand Prix starts at 5.30pm with The Tour Series at 7.30pm. North Lanarkshire Schools' Pipe Band will perform at the start/finish line on Hamilton Road ahead of the men's race, when pupils from Ladywell Primary School will act as team mascots.

Family activities will be happening around the circuit; at the Farm Street park and ride, there will be a climbing wall, smoothie bikes, stunt displays by Clydesdale Colts, accessible bikes from Strathclyde Country Park, and an activity course provided by Wishaw Mountain Bike Club.

Motherwell Library café and the Heritage Centre will both be open throughout the event, and there's a magic show for younger children in the Library at 3.30pm.

The Tour Series and Matrix Fitness Grand Prix in Motherwell are hosted by North Lanarkshire Council, sponsored by Robertson Partnership Homes, NL Leisure, Amey, Mears and Clyde 1, and supported by EventScotland, part of VisitScotland's Events Directorate.
