North Lanarkshire Council has approved its 5-year Strategic Housing Investment plan (SHIP), which aims to deliver over 1,900 new homes over the next five years, double the rate completed over the previous five years, regenerating communities and benefiting the economy.

The SHIP, for 2018-19/2022-23, was approved by councillors at a recent meeting of the Enterprise and Housing Resources Committee and has been submitted to the Scottish Government. It also contains details of the council's own contribution to meeting the need for additional, affordable accommodation through its new build programme, with plans already well underway to build 2,150 new homes for rent by 2026-27, with over 430 delivered to date and a further 450 on site at present.

These new homes will help meet local housing needs across North Lanarkshire, regenerate communities and support the local economy. The homes will be delivered by the council and housing associations supported by nearly £120m of funding from the Scottish Government.

The ambitious new build programme supports the delivery of the council's Local Housing Strategy 2016-21 which sets out the key priorities of:

  • promoting supply of good quality affordable housing across all tenures;
  • contributing to the regeneration and sustainability of places;
  • preventing homelessness and providing appropriate housing support;
  • ensuring there is a range of housing solutions and appropriate support to meet the needs of older households and those with other specific needs;
  • tackling fuel poverty and contributing to meeting Climate Change target, and
  • improving stock condition across all tenures.

Councillor Allan Graham, Convener of Enterprise and Housing said: "We want all of our tenants and residents to enjoy good quality housing in a pleasant and safe environment, and our SHIP details how we'll work with our partners to achieve this.

"As well as helping to meet the shortfall in affordable housing to support the range of needs in our communities, the planned new affordable housing will also help tackle fuel poverty and regenerate town centres.

"By producing a long term plan we hope to realise our vision to assist people to achieve their potential, and be safe, healthy and included by providing access to high quality housing and support."
