Learning about leadership through sport

Forty pupils from Bellshill Academy and Cardinal Newman High School have successfully completed a five-month sports leadership programme

The Leadership Academy for Sport Training, which is supported by Müller, provided vocational and educational courses through sport and community engagement in the Bellshill area.

As well as gaining a certified qualification, the pupils were able to develop their leadership, communication and teamwork skills.  They also took part in work placements, giving them the confidence to create a positive impact in their local community.

The programme provided the pupils the opportunity to take part in the following sports-specific training throughout this period:

  • Sports Leaders UK - Sports Leaders Award
  • Emergency First Aid
  • TOP Play/ TOP Sport Community Deliverers Award
  • Sportscotland - Competition Organiser Training Course
  • Winning Scotland Foundation - Positive Coaching Scotland Workshop
  • Sports Coach UK - Safeguarding & Protecting Children Workshop
  • Make it Happen Basketball Course - Basketball Scotland
  • Disability Awareness Training
  • Working with Children in Sport

Pupils also undertook a volunteering placement - delivering sports - within a local primary or high school.

The pupils are planning to use their new skills to help organise sports days and P7 transition events within their high schools and also to help at local active schools festivals and competitions.

Stuart McLaughlan, Active Schools Coordinator (Bellshill Academy Cluster), said: "We would like to thank Müller for their continued support, for presenting the awards and for being involved in this project and others in North Lanarkshire schools and hope the pupils gained a worthwhile and positive experience."

A spokesman for Müller added: " We are pleased to continue supporting the Leadership Academy for Sport at Bellshill. From our partnerships to our products, we want to encourage people to live active and healthy lifestyles, and it's great to see 178 certified sports training qualifications as a result of this programme."
