North Lanarkshire is proving it's an attractive place to live, with five new housing developments receiving planning permission this month.

Plans for around 750 new homes in Harthill, Moodiesburn, Wishaw, Shotts and Cumbernauld were approved by the council in the last month.

Five planning applications were granted for: 100 houses in Eastfield, Harthill; 62 houses off Gartferry Road in Moodiesburn; 122 new homes at Smithstone, Cumbernauld; up to 350 homes at Shotts; and 111 homes at Meadowhead Road in Craigneuk.

"There is clear demand for more housing across North Lanarkshire as people want to live and work here," said Councillor Harry Curran, Convener of the Planning Sub Committee.

"We have good schools, a thriving economy, good access to the transport network and plenty of parks and leisure facilities, all of which make North Lanarkshire a popular location.

"These latest housing developments, bringing another 750 new homes to the areas, are an indication of the positive housing market here. We are seeing businesses locating here, creating new jobs which further increases demand for good quality housing - all of which is good news for residents and the economy."

Last month, leading energy and services group ENGIE announced it was creating a new base for 120 staff at Strathclyde Business Park in Bellshill, while Virgin Media are relocating 220 jobs from Wales, also to Bellshill. John G Russell Transport Ltd have expanded their warehouse operations, acquiring a 264,000 sq ft unit at Wardpark South, Cumbernauld. Two companies have recently moved into Maxim Office Park: global technology and IT services company Ricoh Business Solutions have opened a new Scottish office and customer experience centre; and Brown McFarlane Ltd, steel plate distributor and processor, are opening office premises.

The council is also contributing to meeting the housing demand through its new build programme, NL Homes, which aims to deliver 5,000 homes by 2035. To date, 22 sites have been completed and the council recently welcomed its 500th tenant to their new home.
