Death of Councillor Gordon Encinias

Gordon Encinias, councillor for the Coatbridge South ward, has died

Councillor Encinias was elected to the council in the local government elections in May 2017. He was 73.

Councillor Jim Logue, leader of the council, said: "Gordon was a lifelong community activist and his political efforts were very much focussed on fighting for the people of Coatbridge. Despite being unwell for some time, he continued to attend council meetings right up until a few weeks ago to represent the people in his ward.

"Although only a councillor since 2017, his dedication to Coatbridge spanned many years. He was a fundamentally decent, straightforward man who will be sorely missed by everyone in the council and in the wider community.

"The thoughts of everyone at the council are with his family and friends."

Councillor Encinias served on a number of council committees including the enterprise and housing and infrastructure committees, as well as the local review body and planning sub-committee.

Funeral details will be announced in due course. Councillor Encinias' death necessitates a by-election for the Coatbridge South ward, details of which will also be announced in due course.
