Mackenzie Forrest, who attends Calderhead High School, took top-spot in the Juvenile 2 March section at the 2018 World Solo Drumming Championships, at Glasgow Caledonian University in October.

Other prize winning pupils from North Lanarkshire Schools included: Jason Hendry (Cumbernauld Academy), Jenna Muir (Cumbernauld Academy), Grace Feeney (St Aidan's High School) and Lachlan Kyle (Clyde Valley High School).

Mackenzie said: "The moment my name was called by the adjudicators I froze, I thought they had made a mistake.  I was so happy as I had put so much work into it and it had paid off.  I couldn't have done it without my two great tutors, Mr Nelson and Mr Henderson."

Leading up to Mackenzie becoming world champion she had already won the Glasgow, West of Scotland, solo drumming two years in row. She was second at the Kingdom Thistle solo drumming in 2017 and was also second at the Shotts & Dykehead stick and pad solos in 2016.

Jim Park, Head of Music Instruction with North Lanarkshire Council, said: "This outstanding level of performance can only be achieved through many hours of practice.

"On behalf of the Instrumental Music Service I would like to congratulate Mackenzie and all of the other pupils who took part in this year's World Solo drumming competition.   I would also like to add my personal thanks to the staff who work tirelessly with our young people to develop their playing to such a high level."

Pamela Cupples, Principle Teacher of Expressive Arts at Calderhead High School, said: "Everyone at Calderhead High School is immensely proud of Mackenzie and her achievements.

"She is an extremely talented, hard-working and conscientious young lady who strives for perfection in everything she does.  I am delighted that Mackenzie's dedication to drumming has been recognised and the award of world champion is very well deserved."

Mackenzie is a member of the hugely successful North Lanarkshire Schools Pipe Band, which has been invited to take part in the Tartan Day parade in New York next April.

In 2018 the band were first in the British Championships, Scottish Championships and European Championships.

They were second at the World Championships and named 2018 Champion of Champions.
