Local heroes inducted into hall of fame

Sports stars honoured

Hall of fame 2019

Former Scottish international footballer Gary McAllister was one of four sports stars to be inducted to the North Lanarkshire Sporting Hall of Fame at a special event at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell.

McAllister, the Assistant Rangers manager, was inducted alongside world champion bowler Caroline Brown, boxing world champion Walter McGowan and swimming champion Nancy Riach.

The NL Sporting Hall of Fame was launched three years ago and includes Ricky Burns, John Higgins, Louise and Kimberley Renwicks Sir Matt Busby and the Lisbon Lions. This year's four new inductees takes the number of people inducted to 29.

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said:"In 2017 we became the first, and to my knowledge remain the only, local authority to celebrate the sporting achievements of people from our area by creating the North Lanarkshire Sporting Hall of Fame.

"The four inductees this year means that we have inducted 29 people over the past three years. And this year's inductees truly deserve their place among North Lanarkshire's finest.

"Their panels along the main corridor within the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility will enhance an already stunning range of sporting success.

"I'd like to thank our sponsors Albert Bartlett, clubsportnl and sportscotland for their marvellous support over the past three years.

"I'd also like to thank everyone for nominating their personal NL sporting hero and for our judging panel for their time and contributions during the challenging selection process."
