A fantastic day of cycling for Motherwell

The OVO Energy Tour Series 2019

Ladywell Primary mascots

Sunshine and top flight professional cycling came to Motherwell on 14 May with the OVO Energy Tour Series.

Tour Series 2019

In the women's race Jess Roberts of Team Breeze took the individual victory, helping her team to the team win and overall leaders after the second round of the competition. Scottish cyclist Rhona Callander, who visited Ladywell Primary School the week before the event, completed the fastest lap of the race in 1 minute 42.486 seconds.

The men's race was won by Jacob Hennessy from Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes, with his team taking the team prize and overall leader position.

Pupils from Ladywell Primary acted as mascots for each of the teams as they were introduced to the crowds, before North Lanarkshire Schools' Pipe Band performed before the men's race.

Provost Jean Jones officially started each race along with the winners of our competition to design flags: Jennifer Ward from Glencairn Primary for the women's race and Hannah Cook from St Brendan's Primary for the men's race.

"We enjoyed an excellent day of cycling again at the Tour Series, with the sunshine bringing out a great crowd to watch the action," said Provost Jean Jones.

"Earlier in the day, pupils from local primary schools took part in Bikeability training before having the opportunity to cycle around the circuit. They all enjoyed the experience which we hope will inspire them to cycle more, perhaps to and from school or at weekends with their friends.

"Congratulations to Scott Baxter from event sponsor Morgan Sindall, the individual winner of our corporate race and Police Scotland who took the team title, beating teams of staff from the council, NL Leisure and Central Scotland Green Network Trust. Thank you to all our sponsors and partners who helped us bring the Tour Series to Motherwell."

Event sponsors are: Morgan Sindall, Scotland The Perfect Stage, North Lanarkshire Leisure, Amey, Clyde 1, Scottish Cycling and Suicide Prevention North Lanarkshire.
