Local people, parents/carers, pupils, parent councils and staff will be asked for their views on the proposals, which have been developed to accommodate additional demand.

There has been significant levels of house building in the area and the new schools - one denominational and the other non-denominational - would ensure pupils have access to schools close to where they live.

Councillor Frank McNally, Convener of Education and Families, said: "Ravenscraig is thriving with thousands of new homes, a college, a sports facility, new businesses and a public park, which will open in the autumn.

"These exciting proposals to create new high quality schools for our young people will further enhance the area.

"It illustrates our drive to transform communities across North Lanarkshire."

The consultation will run for a total of 56 days, including 30 school days, beginning on 2 March 2020 and finishing on 26 April 2020.

Other reasons for the proposals are:

  • To promote community integration between the residents of the new development and the existing Motherwell area.
  • The capital investment will provide local opportunities for economic investment will provide local opportunities for economic investment.
  • To improve health, wellbeing and air quality through a reduction in school transport.
