Community advice

Advice for people with allotments (Thursday 2 April, 11.20am)

If you have an allotment, please follow the public health advice on social distancing and hygiene to help reduce the potential spread of coronavirus. Current government advice is to remain at home and to exercise outside for only a short period once a day. As with all our parks and other community sites, you should only access sites you can walk or cycle to.

As allotments in North Lanarkshire are managed by community and private organisations, please follow any other specific advice provided by these organisations.

Domestic Abuse and Staying Safe (Wednesday 1 April 2020)

Don't assume someone at home is safe.
Perpetrators of domestic abuse often use isolation to control their partners and limit their options.
During this health crisis, many perpetrators will use these tactics and play on fear and anxiety around COVID-19 to further control their partner.
But you can still get support.

Use telephone or e-mail rather than face to face.

If you or someone you know needs support you can contact the following agencies:
Monklands Women's Aid - 01236 432061, info@monklandswomensaid.org.uk
Motherwell and District Women's Aid - 01698 321000, info@mdwa.org.uk
North Lanarkshire Women's Aid - 01236 730992, nlwaid@aol.com
Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre - 01698 527003, support@lanrcc.org.uk

If you find yourself roofless, have no other accommodation, and you require temporary accommodation you can contact North Lanarkshire Council Homeless Out of Hours service on 0800 953 2424.

Shielding and Your Welfare (Wednesday 1 April 2020)

Helpline for Shielding - 0300 555 0407,  Monday to Sunday 8am to 8pm

We are working closely with the Scottish Government and NHS to provide support to around 11,000 people living in North Lanarkshire that need assistance the most and who may be more at risk of becoming seriously ill if they contract the COVID-19 virus.

You may have received a letter from the Scottish Government identifying you as someone that may need support or assistance under their 'Shielding' programme. By 'shielding' people, we are assisting in minimising interaction between people to protect them from being at risk of the COVID-19 virus.

If you have received a letter from the Scottish Government, you will be contacted by a member of our team to discuss your needs. We will then take action to make sure your needs are met.

When you receive a telephone call from us, we will ask to verify your details and talk through what your needs are.

We will also take any further details that will enable us to help you such as delivering essentials such as food or medicine. You may already have someone that assists with these tasks and it would help us if you can provide that information.

It's important to get in touch with us on the helpline number above if you need assistance.

Supporting communities

During these difficult times, people across North Lanarkshire are rallying together to offer support and assistance to help our communities stay connected and equipped with essential items. We are coordinating all offers of support from national bodies through to small community organisations to help keep our communities as safe as possible.

What you can do to help

The most important thing we can all do right now to protect our communities and the NHS is to stay at home to save lives.

That said, we are receiving lots of offers of assistance from individuals, local groups and businesses large and small; everyone is keen to play their part to support vulnerable people in our area which are very much appreciated. All offers are being logged and sent to the most appropriate council service or public agency. You can continue to do this by emailing us at communitymatters@northlan.gov.uk

Alternatively you can choose to go through national channels to learn more about what you might be able to do to help by visiting https://www.readyscotland.org/coronavirus/
