Food and water related illness

We investigate approximately 300 cases of confirmed food and water related infection every year

Cases are usually received from Lanarkshire Health Board following diagnosis resulting from stool samples provided to a GP by the person affected.

Each time a confirmed diagnosis is received by us, the affected person is contacted as soon as possible and a questionnaire completed which helps to identify the source of the infection.

If a likely source is determined, a follow up investigation is carried out and appropriate action taken.

The completed questionnaire is quickly despatched to Lanarkshire Health Board who use the information to identify any wider problems in the community and as a part of the general surveillance of food or water related infections within North Lanarkshire.
