Allanton Primary and Nursery

The accommodation consists of six classrooms, a central library, a staff resource base and a structured play area.

A new nursery was established in 1999. There is a spacious hall, which is also used as a dining area.

Out of school activities is encouraged as a means of further enriching the life of the school. Activities on offer depend on the expertise and availability of staff. Over the last few years we have offered football, music, supported study and choir clubs. This session pupils from P6 and P7 have the opportunity to play football with the other local schools at Calderhead High School. Pupils in P6 and P7 also have the opportunity of a residential experience. Children have the opportunity to try many activities which may not always be possible in their own environment eg orienteering, hill walking etc. It is also another way of developing both social and personal skills.

The school is willing to devote time and energy to community projects. We aim to provide a school in which our community can take pride. Our links with the local church enable us to maintain community involvement. The school continues to look for appropriate projects in the wider community because we feel local residents, businesses and organisations have much to contribute to the preparation of young people for life beyond school. We actively encourage visitors from the wider community into the school. Pupils can gain an insight and an awareness of the world of work when those such as fire and police officers are invited into the school. The school has a semi-rural setting and we feel it is important that we establish links with other schools. An important link with other primary schools is through sports activities which have a central role in promoting healthy attitudes towards participation, competition, winning and losing, fair play and acceptance of decisions made by others.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Allanton primary normally transfer to Calderhead High School, Dyfrig Road, Shotts.
