Terrain:Mainly undulating with fairly flat stretches

The first part of this route from Drumgelloch Station to Plains is about 3km long and uses a section of the National Cycle Network 75 (NCN 75). At Station Road, which bisects the NCN 75, turn left and after about a hundred metres the junction with Main Road, which is also the A89, is reached. Cross this road into Northburn Street then left into Jarvie Street around until it joins Wallace Street and turn left.

At the next junction turn right into Bruce Street and then take the next on the left, which is Annieshill View. At the end of this turn right into Meadowhead Road and on out of Plains.

This minor road winds uphill, sometimes steeply, for 800m. This is the most sever climb that will be encountered on this route. At the top of this hill turn left. Follow this road, passing two junctions on the left, for about 2.4km to a three-way junction and turn left into Darngavil Road. Continue along this road for another 2.4km into Wattson.

Once Wattson is reached turn right on to the B803 in the direction of Greengairs. Travel through the village for 400m and then turn left on to a road known as Cameron Road. (This is the first left after the village has been passed). Carry on around this road for 800m or so and take the road off to the right known as Brackenknowe Road. The scenery here is spectacular, with fine views across to Cumbernauld and the Kilsyth Hills beyond.

At the end of this road turn right and follow this minor road for 800m. The road continues past roads on the right and left, then starts to climb in steps sometimes quite steeply, for short distances, for another 800m.

Another junction with the B803 is reached 1.6km further on. Here turn left and within a few metres right again following the road signed for Longriggend Remand Centre. The road commences uphill, which includes 100m of very steep climb, before passing the Remand Centre, after which it levels off for 800m. It starts to climb again gradually for a few hundred metres to where a road junction is reached. Here turn right to following the road on to the small hamlet of Longriggend. Once over the humped-back railway bridge the road turns at right angles, now called Main Street, through the small village. After 250m the junction with Telegraph Road is reached. Turn right on to Telegraph Road and commence past the peat fields on either side to the junction with the B825.

Carry on downhill to Caldercruix and turn right into the village at Main Street. Commence along Main Street and over the old railway bridge, which now passes over the Glasgow to Edinburgh cycle track. Continue to the bottom of this street where Longriggend and Meadowfield Church are located. Here on the west side of the church the access to the NCN 75 is found. From here carry on to the NCN 75 and continue back in a westerly direction, 4.8km to Drumgelloch Station.
