Beautiful bogs

A peatland restoration project to enhance biodiversity and help fight against climate change.

In partnership with Cumbernauld Living Landscape  we have now completed restoration works to re-wet 3 urban bogs within the Cumbernauld catchment area; Broadwood, Sparrow and Abronhill.

A grant was awarded through NatureScot’s Peatland Action Fund to take forward the works over the winter of 2022 and start of 2023. These works included damming of drainage ditches with both peat and plastic dams, and scrub removal. Some of the scrub removal has been undertaken by TCV volunteers.

Peatland/bogs are hugely important to the environment acting as a carbon store and are an amazing wildlife habitat for many of our rarer species of wildlife. Peatlands in good condition actively form peat, removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing carbon in the soil. This helps in reversing the negative effects of climate change.
