It’s time to make sure you’re ready for the season ahead – that’s the message from the council as it prepares for the winter weather.

Information and advice about being ready for winter is available on the council’s web site at https://www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/winter-services and updates will be available @nlcwinter on Facebook and Twitter.

This includes details of how to prevent frozen and burst pipes, this year’s winter fuel payments for the over 65s, details of the council’s gritting policy and advice on shopping safely online.

Residents are being asked to look out for neighbours who might be vulnerable or on their own, particularly this year because of the coronavirus restrictions.

“Our plans are in place ready for the winter weather, and we would encourage residents to make sure they are prepared too,” said Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of the Environment and Transportation Committee.

“It’s worth keeping a stock of essential items at home, such as non-perishable food, water, nappies and baby food, medicines and pet food, have an emergency kit in your car, keep your mobile charged and check travel reports if you’re driving or using public transport.

“With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it’s even more important this year for everyone to look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours. For many people, it might be difficult to get out to the shops for everyday items or to see family or friends, so please take a few minutes to say check in and see if they need anything.

“The pandemic has highlighted how kind and thoughtful people are, helping others in need. Our community helpline is available for anyone who needs assistance, but few minutes chat at the front door or a phone call could make all the difference to someone’s day.”

The council and its partner Amey have a fleet of gritter lorries and tractors with gritting and snow clearing capacity and the council has a number of mini tractors with salting hoppers that are also available to treat roads and paths when required. In addition, 4x4 vehicles are available to cope with snowy and icy conditions, particularly to help home care teams reach elderly and vulnerable people in poor weather.

Approximately 2,700 salt bins across the council area are available for residents to help keep their local paths and streets clear. Schools have been provided with salt supplies to keep playgrounds and entrances clear of snow and ice.

The Scottish Government’s Ready Scotland web site - https://ready.scot/ - has useful advice and information on being prepared for winter.
