Ravenscraig Levelling Up Fund bid

Update January 2023

Following feasibility work undertaken during late 2021 and early 2022, we made application to round 2 of the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund for support to help us prepare land for development.

In January 2023, unfortunately the UK Government confirmed that our application was not successful. As a result we are unable to progress with the project at this time.

Our thanks again to those who were able to attend the pre-planning application consultation events in October 2022, and to those who gave feedback at the sessions or by email.

We will continue to seek opportunities for investment and support for development at Ravenscraig. We will provide update on any proposals as these are developed.

You can find information on what we proposed below.

Seeking support for the next phases of development in Ravenscraig.

We prepared proposals to develop a large site in Ravenscraig. We sought support from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund to help us prepare the ground so we can build on it.

By doing the ground preparation work, we aimed to:

  • support development at the heart of the masterplan
  • build on the early development of the Sports Facility and College
  • enhance our recent and current investment

The proposal aimed to complement:

  • City Deal transport infrastructure
  • the new Park and Active Travel connections
  • the new Employment Access Road provided by Ravenscraig Limited

The proposed 7.5-hectare site lies directly south of the new park, with Robberhall Road to the west and the new walking and cycle route to the east.

The site is within the mixed-use town centre plots of the 2018 Ravenscraig masterplan.

What we proposed to do?

We sought support to create a development platform for future mixed-use of the site.

The work would include:

  • Improving the ground of the former steelworks to make it suitable for future development by removing buried structures, filling in holes and treating contamination, providing a clean site.
  • Providing new utilities and services infrastructure including more electricity capacity, creating energy links for the future mixed-use development, and providing sustainable urban drainage.
  • Providing new pedestrian, cycling and road access around the site.

Engaging with you about the proposal

Pre-application consultation:

  • as part of the planning process we must go through, we submitted a Proposal of Application Notice.
  • this explains the work we would plan to do and would form the basis of a future planning application.

We held pre-application consultation events in October, online and in person at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

Many thanks to those who were able to attend and to those who have given feedback at the sessions or by email.

At this time, without support we are unable to progress with the project and we will not be submitting a planning application for the works at this time.
