Public bodies climate change duties annual report

We are one of several organisations in Scotland that must produce an annual climate change report.

The report contains information showing progress against our climate change duties. The report submitted in November 2020 shows that our organisational carbon footprint is currently recorded as 77,113 carbon tonnes equivalent.

The full report will be available on Sustainable Scotland Network’s website in Spring 2021. A summary is provided below.

Public bodies climate change duties annual report summary

The council in reporting its carbon footprint has an identified carbon boundary. This boundary looks to capture all emissions within our control. Domestic emissions are not captured as these are not within the operational or financial control. i.e. they are residents’ emissions. The setting of the boundary is in line with the guidance provided to public bodies.

For 2019/20 our organisational carbon footprint was 77,113 carbon tonnes equivalent. Carbon tonnes equivalent is used describe all emission gases that contribute to the build-up of greenhouse gases within the earth’s atmosphere and causes climate change. Our footprint is made up of emissions from buildings, waste, fleet and business travel.

Since 2015/16 we have reduced our footprint by 39,962 carbon tonnes equivalent (34%). This year’s performance (2019/20) has surpassed the 2022 target of 91,665 carbon tonnes equivalent. We declared a Climate Emergency in June 2019 and agreed that we should aim for net zero emissions by 2030. Our Carbon Management Plan will now be revised with a series of targets leading to 2030.
