Exhumations

It is possible in some cases to exhume or disinter human remains from our cemeteries.

In order that an exhumation can take place there are a range of factors to be considered. These include:

  • assessing the feasibility of the exhumation
  • establishing the reason why it is necessary
  • determining who might be affected and obtaining legal authority

Legal authority is obtained by petition to a sheriff court which must be prepared by a solicitor.

There can be significant costs involved in the exhumation process and each circumstance will be different.
