The 'Let's Talk' Challenge

Once a day, speak to one person you don't know.

That's it! One brief exchange – a smile, a "good morning," a quick comment in line – and science says it’ll likely lead to both of you feeling happier, more connected, and more confident.

Most of us avoid talking to strangers. We assume it’ll be awkward or unwelcome. But research suggests we’re wrong. Strangers are open to conversation nearly twice as often as we expect – and both people usually enjoy it more than they thought they would.

In a world where texting and scrolling have replaced real connection, this small daily challenge brings something increasingly rare: human interaction. For some, it may be the only conversation they have all day. For you, it might just shift your mindset.

Start small. Smile. Say hello. If it goes nowhere, fine. But try again tomorrow.

You might make someone’s day – or even your own.

Why take the challenge?

Aside from the benefits already described?

The better we are at talking, the more likely we are to start conversations. And the more we do this, the greater the chance that we'll get talking to someone who really needs support or a listening ear.

If you do find yourself speaking to someone who's struggling with low mood or even suicidal thoughts there are things that can be done to support them. It starts with acknowledging those thoughts and talking.
