Ravenscraig Park

Works underway to create the new public park

Ravenscraig Park

We are creating a new public park in the centre of the former Ravenscraig steelworks site next to the Regional Sports Facility.

The park will provide new opportunities for:

  • Play and recreation
  • Sports and leisure for people of all ages
  • Families and communities to enjoy a high quality green environment

You can see the details of our proposals in the  pdf icon Design & Access statement [2Mb] which provides a summary of the aims and ideas behind the design of the park and the pdf icon approved layout [4Mb]. You can view all the information associated with this through the planning portal using the reference number 18/01829/FUL.

What's happening now

Our first contractor, VHE Construction PLC, has recently completed preparing the ground for the new park.

You can see images of what this work looked like on the ground, from pdf icon before the work started [4Mb], to the pdf icon site being cleared [4Mb] and the pdf icon drainage layer [5Mb] being nearly complete.

Our main contractor, idverde Ltd, has started to create the park by constructing the pdf icon new paths and bringing in the soil [4Mb] needed for the grass, plants and trees to grow.

(All of the aerial images have been provided by David Neilson - student at New College Lanarkshire)

What's happening next

Idverde Ltd will continue working over the winter and into spring and summer 2020.

On Wednesday 4 December, along with idverde, we are hosting a pdf icon drop-in event [176kb] at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility between 3.00pm and 6.00pm.

Information and plans about the new park will be on display, and staff will be available to answer any questions and discuss the project.

We are continuing to work with local schools and the New College Lanarkshire to offer opportunities for involvement, education and training. We will be posting updates and stories on these in the new year.

As works progress, we will provide details of opportunities to be involved in the Park. If you have not done so already, please sign up for updates.

What we have done

Following Committee approval in May, we appointed contractors to undertake the works.

Those who subscribed to our updates, were invited to a community workshop in April. We now have a group of community members volunteering to be more involved in the Park. Thank you to all who attended, and particularly to those who volunteered!

In 2018 we held consultation events during  pdf icon October [5Mb] and pdf icon November [3Mb]. The comments you gave on our proposals in person and through the website have been very valuable. These helped us shape our proposals before submitting the planning application in December 2018.

The development of the public park is supported by the Scottish Government.
