Frequently asked questions about the Modern Apprenticeship programme

Check out most commonly asked questions we get about Modern Apprenticeships.

What age do you need to be to do an Modern Apprenticeship?

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must be aged 16 to 24, or 16 to 29 if you are care experienced or have an additional support need.

How long does an Modern Apprenticeship last?

This depends on the modern apprenticeship you are doing. For example the Early Learning & Childcare SVQ 3 takes 12 months and the Accountancy apprenticeship last for 15 months.

Do Modern Apprentices get paid?

Yes. You will be paid an apprentice wage. Find out more about the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates.

You will be supported every step of the way with your learning, work and assessments. On a modern apprenticeship you will work closely with a colleague who acts a  workplace buddy, an assessor who guides you through the qualification and a manager you will support you to complete work tasks. The Early Careers team also provide assistance from applying for a Modern Apprenticeship right through to supporting you at the end of your apprenticeship to move on to further opportunities.

Do I get a job at the end of my apprenticeship?

We would love for all our apprentices to gain employment at the end of their apprenticeship but there is no guarantee. The Early Careers team will support you into employment and signpost you on to other services that can work with you once your apprenticeship has ended. You will also have access to the Council’s internal vacancy list for up to three months from your end date.

Will I need to attend a college to complete my qualification?

Qualifications are delivered two ways:

  • day release - you will attend college to complete your qualification
  • work based - an assessor will attend your place of work

The method of qualification delivery depends on what apprenticeship you choose. You may also need to study at home and complete coursework at the weekends.

Can I just do the work experience and not the qualification?

To fully complete your apprenticeship you need to do both your qualification and your work placement.  In addition you are offered an wide selection of North Lanarkshire Council learning modules.
