We regularly receive reports of graffiti on utility cabinets and requests to have it cleaned.
We can only remove graffiti if it’s on council-owned property. In some cases, the utility cabinets are owned by other public organisations or private companies.
This page provides information to help identify who is responsible for each type of cabinet or equipment and where you should report the graffiti, or any other problem.

Most electricity equipment will have a sign stating it is owned by Scottish Power and the electrical hazard sign below. Older boxes will be painted green, while more recent boxes are dark grey. You should report any problems on the Scottish Power website.

SGN cabinets come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are normally clearly marked with ownership and contact details.

Openreach has a range of equipment relating to phone lines, including boxes, poles and road and footpath covers. Most cabinets are green and have a metal mark showing details such as GPO, BT and Telecom. A guide to the company’s apparatus and a form to report damage are available on the Openreach website.
Virgin Media cabinets are very similar to Openreach’s unit. Please see the Openreach guide above which highlights distinguishing factors. You should report any problems on the Virgin Media website.
Vodafone cabinets are similar to Openreach units but are normally clearly labelled and provide contact details. You should report any problems on the Vodafone website.
If you see someone on the railway, please call the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or dial 999. Find out how Network Rail tackle graffiti on the railway and what you can do to report it on the Network Rail website.
For issues requiring immediate attendance such as offensive graffiti (racist, sexual, obscene) on bus shelters, please call 0800 373635 (available 24 hours, 365 days a year).

We have utility cabinets for equipment relating to street lighting and traffic lights. These are usually grey. You can report problems with our boxes below. If possible, please provide a photo of the utility box and its location when reporting a problem to help us identify the box.
