Building standards customer guidance

Building Standards fee increase

Please note, with effect from 1 April 2024 Building Standards fees will increase inline with Scottish Government Regulations.

Please visit the Scottish Government website for more information.

Update on response times for applications and enquiries

Due to the significant volume of applications and enquiries we are receiving, it is currently taking longer than the published ten days to respond.

We are working through each enquiry and aim to respond as quickly as possible. However, you are likely to experience delays.

We appreciate your understanding and patience.

If you are making home improvements or starting building work, this guide from the Scottish Government will help to explain the building standards system.

It will give you information on what types of work need a building warrant, what information you will need to submit and will tell you about the process and how long it will take.

The Scottish Government guidance Making a Quality Building Warrant Application - What you need to know will provide useful information and includes a technical checklist of what you need to consider when making a good quality building warrant application.

If you may be building on contaminated land please visit contaminated-land.

If you are proposing work that includes a commercial kitchen please visit Food safety advice for businesses.

You can contact us if you would like to discuss your proposal or your specific needs. We are happy to arrange pre-application discussions to offer you tailored advice.

If you disagree with an interpretation of the Building Standards that we have adopted when considering your application, you can ask for an interpretation through Local Authority Building Standards Scotland (LABSS). For advice and guidance on this dispute resolution process please contact LABSS
