An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) helps determine how a proposed development might significantly affect the environment. It applies to a wide range of projects from large-scale developments to smaller ones that could still have notable environmental impacts.
Do I need an EIA?
To find out if your development requires an EIA, you can apply to us for an EIA screening opinion.
The Scottish Government provides a helpful checklist to guide you through preparing and submitting your screening request. We aim to respond within three weeks of receiving your application.
How to apply for an EIA screening opinion
To apply, please email us with the following:
- Pre-Application Screening Notice: Complete the EIA Screening option form and upload all relevant documents.
- EIA Screening Checklist (optional but helpful): Completing this checklist can help us assess your application more efficiently.
- Location Plan: A map or plan showing where the proposed development will take place.
- Brief Description of the Proposal: A short summary of what your development involves.
- Potential Environmental Effects: Include any known or anticipated environmental impacts, and any steps you plan to take to reduce them.
What happens next?
If we determine that an EIA is required and you disagree, you have the right to appeal.
