We’re carrying out essential website maintenance on Wednesday, 18 February, between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Our website will be unavailable during this time.
What is SHQS?
The Scottish Housing Quality Standard (SHQS) is a standard for the homes of all council tenants in Scotland, set by the Scottish Government.
Every year, we tell the Scottish Government how many of our properties meet this standard. We check homes to make sure they are:
- safe to live in
- warm and energy-efficient
- modern and comfortable
How do you check if my home meets the SHQS?
One of our officers visits and carries out a survey of your home. All North Lanarkshire Council staff members carry a badge to show that they work for the council.
The survey takes about 30-60 minutes. We won’t disturb furniture or decoration.
What will a SHQS survey involve in my home?
We look at five main things:
Basic living standards
We check if your home has the basics like:
- strong walls and roof
- working toilet and sink
- clean water and proper drainage
Energy efficiency
We check:
- insulation (how well your home keeps heat in)
- heating system (is it working properly?)
Modern facilities
We check:
- kitchen and bathroom (are they in reasonable condition and safe?)
- plumbing and electrics (are they working properly?)
Health, safety and security
We make sure your home has:
- good ventilation
- fire and electrical safety
- secure doors and windows
No serious damage
We look for any substantial problems with the building, like cracks or leaks.
When will my home be surveyed?
Every year we visit a number of tenants homes to carry out SHQS surveys.
If we need to survey your home, you will be sent a text message with the dates our officers will be in your area.
If you receive a text, please contact us on 0800 9530256 to pick a date and suitable to you for the survey to take place.
Survey appointment times are available Monday – Friday from 9am - 4pm.
