Northern Corridor Area Vision

As part of North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) Wards 5 and 6, the Northern Corridor is a vibrant semi‑rural area made up of the communities of Auchinloch, Cardowan, Chryston, Gartcosh, Glenboig, Greenfoot, Annathill, Mollinsburn, Millerston, Moodiesburn, Mount Ellen, Muirhead, Ramoan and Stepps. Together, these neighbourhoods form a growing and diverse place to live, learn, work, invest and visit.

Building a Stronger Sense of Place

The Vision centres on supporting communities with the facilities, infrastructure and services they need to thrive. By strengthening links between villages and improving access to key services, the aim is to create a place that works for all residents.

Places of Learning

Education is at the heart of the Northern Corridor. The area currently benefits from 10 primary schools and 1 secondary school, with further improvements on the way. These developments will help ensure that families have access to modern, high‑quality learning environments close to home. Recent and planned facilities include:

  • Chryston Community Hub.
  • Development of Gartcosh Community Hub.
  • Development of Glenboig Community Hub.
  • Development of Chryston High School extension.

Active Travel: Connecting Our Communities

Improving how people move around the Northern Corridor is a key priority. Better‑designed walking, wheeling and cycling routes will help reduce reliance on cars, ease congestion and make it easier for everyone to reach local facilities. Routes already making a difference include:

  • The Right of Way on Langmuirhead Road, linking Auchinloch to Stepps.
  • The Strathkelvin Railway Path, a 10km route connecting Moodiesburn, Gartcosh and beyond.

North Lanarkshire Council is also developing Strategic Network Route 6 (SNR 6) which is a major new active travel corridor running from Stepps to Condorrat. The route includes Northern Corridor communities such as Chryston and Moodiesburn. This project aims to transform the A80 corridor into a safe, continuous and attractive route for walking and cycling with local people asked for their views on how the route should be developed.

A Growing Community

The Northern Corridor continues to expand with new neighbourhoods and housing developments. To support this growth new infrastructure is being planned, including:

  • A Council-led housing development at Coshneuk Road, Millerston, delivering 17 new homes in 2026.
  • Better links to existing services, schools and community facilities (active travel routes and new community hubs).
  • Improvements to strengthen links that will assist local people and those moving into the area to access existing provision.

A Place for All

Local amenities and accessible greenspaces play a vital role in supporting community wellbeing, contributing to both physical health and social cohesion. Within the Northern Corridor, the Seven Lochs Wetland Park project represents a significant asset, enhancing the natural environment while creating an attractive and inclusive destination for residents and visitors alike.

Key locations within this network, including Frankfield Loch, Garnqueen Loch and Johnston Loch, provide opportunities for recreation, outdoor learning, and biodiversity enhancement. Together, these spaces strengthen the overall appeal of the Northern Corridor as a place that promotes active lifestyles and connects communities to high-quality green infrastructure.

Cardowan Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) is a play facility developed by North Lanarkshire Council in partnership with Cardowan Community Meadow and local young people.

Similarly, Moodiesburn play area at the top end of the estate was developed in partnership with Moodiesburn Community Action group and Glenboig Development Trust has partnered with NLC to improve the Village Play Park facility – projects based on the needs and wishes of local young people.

Local community groups, such as Northern Corridor Community Volunteers and Cardowan Community Meadow, help look after local greenspaces and they also offer a range of free activities, including health walks and access to free bikes.

Celebrating Our Heritage

The Northern Corridor has a rich industrial history, from coal mining to brickmaking and steelworks. Celebrating this heritage helps build pride in our past while shaping our shared future. A heritage project, led by local community groups, has brought this story to life through the Northern Corridor Heritage Trail, highlighting sites such as:

  • Former mining communities at Auchengeich, Bedlay and Cardowan.
  • The world‑famous Glenboig firebrick industry.
  • Gartcosh Steelworks, which once employed around 700 people.

Opportunities Ahead

The Vision for the Northern Corridor focuses on creating stronger, healthier and more connected communities. Key opportunities include:

  • Developing new community hubs to complement the one in Chryston.
  • Enhancing local health, leisure and education provision.
  • Expanding the active travel network.
  • Celebrating local heritage.
  • Strengthening the area as a great place to live, learn, work, invest and visit.
