Creating a safe, calm environment around our schools depends on everyone using the roads and parking areas responsibly. Thank you for helping us keep children, families, and staff safe during the busiest times of the day.
Why safe parking matters
Congestion outside schools can make it harder for children to see approaching traffic, increases the risk of accidents, reduces air quality and causes frustration for local residents.
While we want to encourage sustainable travel to school, especially walking, we recognise that some parents will have to use the car for at least part of their journey to school. Small changes in how and where we park make a big difference to safety and to the overall school community.
Good parking practices for parents and carers
- Keep entrances clear – do not block school gates, driveways, junctions or emergency access routes. These must always remain clear of parked vehicles.
- Switch off your engine – idling contributes to air pollution around the school. Turning off your engine helps protect children’s health.
- Use “park and stride” options – park a short distance away and walk the final few minutes. This reduces congestion and supports active travel.
- Be patient and considerate – allow extra time during peak periods. A few extra minutes can prevent unsafe manoeuvres and reduce stress for everyone.
- Encourage independence where appropriate – consider drop‑off points slightly away from the school to reduce traffic at the school gates.
- Do not park on restrictions – school Keep Clear markings and single and double yellow line markings are there for a reason and should not in any circumstances be parked on during the time of their operation. Any vehicle witnessed to be parked on these restrictions can be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.
- Do not park on the pavement – pavements are provided for pedestrian use only. Parking on a pavement is illegal and introduces road safety issues for vulnerable pedestrians. Any vehicle witnessed to be parked on a pavement can be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.
- Do not park at pedestrian crossing points – it is illegal to park at dropped kerb crossing points. When parking, look out for any dropped kerbs and keep them clear. Any vehicle witnessed to be parked at these locations can be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.
- Park only at the kerbside – it is illegal to park any more than 500mm from the edge of the carriageway, therefore any vehicle parked on central islands, grass verges etc are liable to a Penalty Charge Notice.
Supporting Sustainable Travel
Walking, cycling, or scooting to school helps reduce traffic, improves air quality, and supports children’s wellbeing. Many schools offer walking routes or travel plans to help families choose active options.
You could also consider:
- setting up a walking bus with other parents/carers and the school
- car-sharing
- using public transport
