How can your strengths help you figure out your future?

You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do yet.

Your interests, personality and the things you’re naturally good at can give you clues about what you might enjoy in the future.

You might be great at coming up with ideas, helping people, fixing things, solving problems or keeping everyone organised. Your strengths might show up in school, but they can also come from your hobbies, sport, gaming, volunteering, looking after others or the things you enjoy doing in your spare time.

Start by finding out a little more about yours.

What's your thing? Take our quiz.

There’s more than one way to get there

Your future doesn’t have to follow one route

Finding something you’re interested in is only the beginning. There are lots of different ways to build skills, gain experience and work towards your future.

Depending on what works for you, your next step could be:

Apprenticeship
Earn, learn and gain experience while working towards a qualification.

College
Develop practical skills, study a subject in more depth or work towards further qualifications.

University
Study a subject in depth and work towards a degree or other higher-education qualification.

Training
Build specific skills, confidence, experience or qualifications to help you move towards work.

Employment
Learn and develop while working.

Volunteering
Gain experience, meet people, build confidence and discover strengths you might not have realised you had.

Personal and social development
Build confidence, skills and experience before deciding what you want your next step to be.

Starting your own business
Turn an idea, interest or skill into something of your own.

You don’t have to decide your whole future now. Sometimes the best place to start is simply trying something.
