School attendance guidance for pupils

Why school attendance matters

Why is school attendance so important?

Why does school attendance matter?

Every day in school is an opportunity – to learn, discover your talents, and shape your future. We want every young person to reach their full potential, whatever that looks like for you. And remember, school staff are here to support you every step of the way.

School isn’t just about exams and homework. It’s about building confidence, developing skills, and preparing for life beyond the classroom. Being in school connects you with friends, opens doors to new opportunities, and helps you get ready for whatever comes next. Every day really does count.

Here’s what regular attendance gives you:

  • Skills for life and work – the foundations for whatever path you choose.
  • A safe space to learn and grow – and challenge yourself along the way.
  • Time with friends – plus chances to make new ones.
  • Opportunities to celebrate achievements – big or small.
  • Confidence and resilience – qualities that will carry you through life.
  • A better understanding of the world – and the people in it.

Your future starts with the choices you make today – and showing up is the first step.

Here’s what other pupils in North Lanarkshire say they enjoy about school:

“Meeting different people and learning new skills.”

“I enjoy coming to school to see my friends.”

“The wide variety of different subjects you get to learn.”

“I like all the extra opportunities - like school trips.”

“I enjoy coming to school to see my friends. I like PE.”

“I like being able to socialise with different people and football academy.”

“Getting an education and being able to learn new things”

And when they miss a day?

“You’d miss being part of something together.”

“You miss out on learning things that are important for your future.”

“You’d miss out on learning and knowledge that is important for your future”

“You’d miss meeting different people and learning new skills.”

“Miss out on being part of a community.”

“Miss out on school trips or taking part in sports.”

We know that things aren’t always easy and when they’re not, there are people who can help you. From your support teacher, to other members of school staff, to organisations outside of school such as:
