Services for people affected by crime

Support for victims of crime and the families of people who are in prison

We recognise that crime affects people in a number of different ways.

Services are available to provide support to individuals who have been the victims of crime and need help to deal with the after effects or repercussions.

Support is also available to those people who have been affected by a family member's imprisonment.

Victims of crime

Services in the North Lanarkshire area to support people who have been the victims of crime:

Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre provides emotional and practical support for women and girls over the age of 12, who have experienced all forms of sexual violence, including rape, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse. Lanarkshire Rape Crisis receives funding from a number of sources including North Lanarkshire Council, to provide support to the local population from its base in Hamilton.

PETAL people experiencing trauma and loss provides services specifically to people who have experienced bereavement or traumatic loss as a result of murder or suicide. Supported by North Lanarkshire, this service is based in Hamilton.

North Lanarkshire further benefits from many other support services for victims, including Women's Aid services:

Imprisonment can often be traumatic for families, through the process of arrest, trial, imprisonment and release.

Adults and children within affected families can be negatively affected by risks to housing, financial pressures, the emotional impact of loss and stigma and victimisation by neighbours and the community.

Families Outside is a national organisation that provides support to families of people through a Support and Information Helpline, as well as one-to-one support.
