Voter ID at elections

At the next General Election, voters must show photo ID to vote at polling places.

There are several forms of identification you can use, including:

  • a passport
  • driver’s licence
  • blue badge
  • Scottish National Entitlement Card
  • Young Scot card

You can find a full list of accepted forms of photo ID or watch the Electoral Commission’s short video.

If you don’t have any of these forms of ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, known as a Voter Authority Certificate.

The Electoral Commission has produced videos about applying for a Voter Authority Certificate and the information you need to provide when submitting your application.

If you have photo ID but it is out of date, you can still use it as long as the photo still looks like you and the name on your ID is the same name you used to register to vote.

For more information about voter ID as well as registering to vote and applying to vote by post or proxy, visit the Electoral Commission website.

Please note: voters do not need to show photo ID at Scottish Parliament or Scottish council elections.
