Cumbernauld 10K organisers have presented Ian Winship with a trophy following his world-beating performance in this year's event.

Ian recorded what is believed to be the fastest-ever 10K time by a 90-year-old when he completed the Cumbernauld 10K on 13 September in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 37 seconds.

Event manager Stuart Smith said: "To be honest, we never considered having an over-90s trophy, but then we hadn't factored in Ian and all his incredible achievements. It's great that we were able to present him with his trophy today."

Provost Kenneth Duffy said: "It was a real privilege to present Ian with his trophy. To complete a 10K at the age of 90 is an outstanding achievement, and to do it in a world-best time for his age group makes it even more remarkable. Ian is an inspiration, and North Lanarkshire is incredibly proud of him."

"I’m overwhelmed and I can’t take it all in," Ian Winship said. "I really never expected so many people. I'm just an ordinary guy from Cumbernauld who happened to run well."

He said that Cumbernauld is "an ideal place for running", adding: "You're surrounded by trees and forests.

"I try to do 20,000 steps every day. I think that's what's keeping me going. I also watch what I eat. It's been hard work, but it's been worth it."

He also said he is planning to run the 10K in less than an hour next year, beating his own record.

"I'm going to beat it,” he said.

"When you're running, if you're giving your all, it doesn't matter what you're doing. If you don't leave yourself exhausted, you've left something behind. You've just got to go for the finishing line."

Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of Communities, added: "Ian is a true inspiration to everyone who hears about his incredible achievements.

"His positive approach to life is an example to us all and reflects the strong community spirit that events such as North Lanarkshire's Cumbernauld 10K aim to promote.

"We would like to thank the NHS Suicide Prevention Team for its continued support of the Cumbernauld 10K. Its investment in the event over recent years has helped us continue to deliver a high-quality community event that encourages people of all ages and abilities to take part."

The Cumbernauld 10K is organised by North Lanarkshire Council. This year marked the 19th staging of the event, which attracts runners of all ages and abilities. The race starts and finishes at Broadwood Stadium.

In 2018, the event was named Scotland's 10K of the Year at the National Running Awards.

The Cumbernauld 10K is a community road race based at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld. The main 10K race is supported by a programme of shorter events, making it accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Runners in the 10K take on a road course around Cumbernauld, with the stadium providing the event base and finish line. A 5K race offers a shorter challenge, while younger participants can take part in the 1K, 400m and Toddler Dash.

The event has a strong community and family focus, with activities taking place throughout the day. Participants receive a finisher's medal, and the range of distances gives both experienced runners and families the opportunity to take part.
