Pupils and staff at Clarkston Primary have had a year of success, gaining awards for their efforts on the sports pitch, in the classroom and in the community.

The school was named North Lanarkshire Council's Sport School of the Year 2026 at an awards ceremony in Airdrie Town Hall in September.

It has also been given Reading School status and a Reading School Award by the Scottish Book Trust.

Pupils took part in the TCS London Mini Marathon for Schools, joining around 621,000 children across Britain who walked, jogged or ran 2.6 miles. Clarkston's children did theirs around the school sports pitch, and the school won a Mini Marathon in Schools award.

The school also received a Team Jak Volunteer award for raising £2,935 for the charity. The charity supported pupils, families and staff after the tragic death of a child in primary 1.

A "Soak the Teacher" event raised £735, and staff walked 11.5 miles in the Edinburgh Kilt Walk, raising a further £2,200. Members of the Clarkston community supported both events.

Head Teacher Yvonne Callander said: "I am absolutely bursting with pride that our school has been recognised with four fantastic awards this year. These achievements are a true reflection of the enthusiasm, commitment, and dedication of our whole school community, but I am particularly proud of our amazing pupils and staff.

“They give so much of themselves to sport, enthusiastically attending after-school and lunchtime clubs, taking on the role of Sports Ambassadors, representing our school at tournaments and taking part in our Mini Marathon.

“Our Reading Award recognises the wonderful reading culture we have developed across the school. I love seeing children choosing to spend their lunchtime immersed in books, making use of our outdoor library book trolley organised by our Reading Ambassadors . It is fantastic to see reading becoming such a valued and enjoyable part of everyday school life.”

I am equally proud of their kindness and generosity in supporting Team Jak, raising money for such a worthwhile cause, and showing compassion and care for others. It is wonderful to see our children not only striving to achieve their very best but also thinking of others and making a positive difference.

Pupil Connie Kean said: "I really liked the mini marathon because we all ran together around the pitch, it helped keep us fit and it helped us build our stamina. It was fun knowing so many other schools were doing it too."

Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families, said: "Congratulations to everyone at Clarkston Primary on these fantastic achievements. It's great to see the pupils doing so well in sport and reading, and the way the school and community came together to raise money for Team Jak is a credit to them. Well done to the pupils, staff and families."
