A new group of apprentices has begun their careers with Mears as part of North Lanarkshire Council's Enterprise contract.

The latest intake joins one of Scotland's largest and most successful apprenticeship programmes, delivered through North Lanarkshire Council's Strategic Housing and Repairs Partnership with Mears. The programme combines practical, on-the-job training with nationally recognised qualifications, giving apprentices the opportunity to earn while they learn.

More than 130 apprentices are currently progressing through the four-year programme with Mears, with a further 30 employed through its supply chain. They are developing skills in a range of key trades, including joinery, painting and decorating, plumbing, heating, bricklaying and plastering. Through the Enterprise contract, Mears will deliver 600 apprenticeships.

The new recruits will play an important role in maintaining and improving council homes and public buildings while working towards rewarding long-term careers in the construction and maintenance sectors.

To welcome the latest intake, Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, met with the apprentices and heard about their ambitions for the future.

He said: "It's always encouraging to meet young people who are taking the first steps in their careers and are eager to learn new skills.

"Apprenticeships provide a direct route into employment, helping young people build confidence, gain recognised qualifications and develop valuable experience in the workplace. The apprenticeship programme really is an outstanding success story.

"Our partnership with Mears continues to create opportunities for local people while supporting the delivery of essential services across North Lanarkshire. I wish this year's apprentices every success as they begin their journey."

Kyle Savage, a third-year apprentice bricklayer, said: "I'd recommend this to anyone as it's a great way to help the community and it's fully funded."

Amy, a third-year electrical apprentice, added: "I love the problem-solving aspects of what we do. I find I work better with my hands and I love fault-finding. It's great when you find a solution!"

Gavin Hay, Training and Development Manager at Mears, said: "We are delighted to welcome our newest apprentices and support them as they develop their skills and build their careers.

"The programme continues to attract talented young people from across North Lanarkshire who are keen to learn, contribute and make a difference in their communities. Completion rates within the apprenticeship programme currently stand at 98.5%, which is incredible.

"We work hard to ensure that our apprentices are representative of communities across North Lanarkshire. It's particularly pleasing to note that all of our former apprentices have gone on to enjoy successful careers with Mears, and we look forward to seeing what this latest group will achieve in the years ahead."

The partnership between North Lanarkshire Council and Mears supports around 500 local jobs and continues to deliver significant social value through employment, training and skills development opportunities for local residents.

The next round of apprentice recruitment will begin in February 2027. For more information, visit Mears Careers.
