Our Finance and Resources Committee has approved plans to purchase 75 affordable homes as part of the first phase of new housing development at Mid Forest, Cumbernauld.
The homes form part of the South Cumbernauld Community Growth Area, which is allocated within the Local Plan for 2,000 new build homes across two sites at Mid Forest and Palacerigg.
This first phase at Mid Forest will deliver 300 homes in total by Bellway, with the council acquiring 75 “off the shelf” for rent. The purchase supports the council’s Affordable Housing Policy, which requires developers to provide either homes or financial contributions to meet housing needs in areas of high demand.
The council’s new homes will include a mix of cottage flats, terraced houses and semi-detached properties, providing high-quality housing options for families, couples and individuals.
Councillor Barry McCulloch, Vice-Convener of the Finance and Resources Committee, said: “This is great news for Cumbernauld and another step forward in our commitment to providing more affordable, modern, and energy-efficient homes for local people. These new council properties will make a real difference to families who need them most and will sit alongside private housing to create a balanced and sustainable community.
“Approving this purchase demonstrates our determination to tackle housing need across North Lanarkshire while investing in long-term regeneration that benefits residents now and for generations to come.”
Construction is underway, with the new affordable homes expected to be ready by May 2028.
