Pupils and staff at Sacred Heart Primary School and Nursery in Bellshill were celebrating after being awarded the Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award by UNICEF UK.
The award recognises the school’s long-standing commitment to promoting and protecting children’s rights, both within the classroom and in the wider community.
Sandra McLean, head teacher, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to receive the Gold Award. It’s a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our pupils and staff over many years. Children’s rights are at the heart of everything we do, and it’s wonderful to see that recognised."
During the recent accreditation visit, pupils impressed assessors with their strong understanding of children’s rights and their confidence in speaking up about issues that matter to them.
The school was praised for embedding dignity, equity, and wellbeing into its daily life, and for encouraging pupils to become active champions of rights beyond the school gates.
One example of this is the school’s current campaign to improve road safety on Liberty Road.
Pupils have raised concerns about speeding traffic and have contacted local politicians to push for change.
Provost Kenneth Duffy, who joined the school in celebrating the award, said: "Sacred Heart Primary is a shining example of how schools can empower young people to make a real difference.
“It is clear that the whole school has embraced a culture based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and this Gold Award is truly well deserved."
The school plans to mark the achievement with a special gold celebration day, where pupils and staff were joined by Provost Duffy and Frank McNally MP.
Pupils at Sacred Heart Primary have been key contributors to the school's success through their hard work and they highlighted the school's commitment to children’s rights.
- Riley said: "I was so honoured to be part of sharing our gold journey with the VIPs. Being a gold school makes me feel proud".
