To mark the special occasion, Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, joined local children from the Time Travellers initiative to bury a capsule filled with memories and creative work.

The children shared a short film showcasing their project, made by local filmmaker Colin Mathieson.

Councillor Logue said: “Airdrie Library has been at the heart of our community for a century, offering generations a place to learn, connect and grow. The anniversary celebrations show just how important it continues to be, especially for our young people. I’m proud to see the creativity and enthusiasm they’ve brought to this milestone.”

The libraries' digital team created a film of local poet, Ross Mitchell's specially written poem about the library and its place in the community, which was screened in the new immersive room.

The event, which took place on Thursday 25 September, wrapped up with a cake-cutting ceremony, celebrating the library’s centenary in style.

In the evening, acclaimed author Graeme Armstrong gave a talk about male violence and mental health in the West of Scotland; the causes and solutions.

He weaved this presentation with personal reflections on his youth in Airdrie as a gang member and his difficult path to recovery.

Graeme’s journey was one of victim and perpetrator of crime to acclaimed author who is actively influencing policy on crime.

As part of the Rediscovering Airdrie project, the council has plans to refurbish and modernise the library.

This includes demolishing the 1960s extension and creating new meeting rooms and an outside viewing platform and new learning space for the observatory.
