Pupils from Greenhill Primary School marked World Book Day with a lively visit to Coatbridge Library, taking part in storytelling and activities designed to spark a love of reading.

The session was led by Carnegie‑nominated author and poet Simon Lamb, who read to the pupils.
He said: “What a pleasure it was to join Coatbridge Library for the launch of the National Year of Reading this World Book Day.”

Greenhill pupil Cara added: “We all had a great time hearing Simon read us some poems and stories for World Book Day. My favourite bit was when he read Green Eggs and Ham!”

The celebration comes as preparations continue for the National Year of Reading 2026. North Lanarkshire Council’s long‑standing partnership with Scottish Book Trust plays an important part in this work, supporting families through the Bookbug and Read, Write, Count gifting programmes, and helping local schools progress through the national Reading Schools accreditation.

Councillor Geraldine Woods, Communities Convener, said:  “It’s wonderful to see our children so excited about reading and to witness the impact our libraries and schools are having. World Book Day is always a highlight, but this year’s celebration also shows the strength of our partnership with Scottish Book Trust and the progress we are making in supporting literacy for every child in North Lanarkshire. It reflects our clear commitment to supporting literacy and lifelong learning throughout our communities.”

North Lanarkshire’s libraries continue to offer free Bookbug Sessions, targeted family support, and access to a wide range of books and activities all year round. These will form an important part of the year‑long series of events to celebrate the National Year of Reading throughout 2026.
