Work is beginning on site in Shawhead, Coatbridge, to deliver 100 new council homes.

A sod cutting took place at Dunottar Avenue, Shawhead, marking the start of building work on the site of the former low-rise blocks of flats.

The development, being delivered by CCG (Scotland) comprises 76 houses and cottage flats, which are a mix of two, three and four bedrooms and 24 flats, a mix of one and two bedrooms. Eleven of the homes are designated for wheelchair users. It's part of our ambitious new supply programme to deliver 6,000 new homes by 2035.

The homes and cottage flats will be serviced by air source heat pump heating technology and the blocks of flats will be serviced by exhaust air technology. The development is also set to benefit from a multi-utility games arena and play park too.

Cutting the first sod was Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake. He was joined by councillors Andrew Bustard and Tracy Carragher; Alastair Thomson and David Wylie, CCG; Billy Hetherton, Neil Watts, Jim Stewart, Stephen Llewellyn, Ryan Marshall and Nicole Swallow from North Lanarkshire Council.

Councillor McPake said: “As part of our reprovisioning plans, to transform towns and communities, low rise flats on this site were demolished to be replaced by modern, energy efficient homes.

“We are continuing to make significant progress delivering our new supply homes with 1,629 already delivered and a further 193 on site. And it’s not just new housing we’re building. We’re creating job opportunities, boosting the local economy and delivering a range of community benefits.

“These homes will change the face of our local communities, providing sustainable housing for our tenants now and for generations to come – all part of our ambition to make North Lanarkshire the place to live.”

All our new homes comply with the highest energy efficiency standards, helping tackle fuel poverty. They are also designed to Housing for Varying Needs standards, meaning they are adaptable to suit different tenants’ needs over the years and are Secured by Design accredited.

CCG Managing Director, David Wylie, added: “With construction activities now underway in Shawhead, CCG is set to deliver 230 affordable homes across two developments in Coatbridge by mid-2027. That is a significant number that will go a long way to supporting the needs of families in the town and stands a testament to the strength of our partnership with North Lanarkshire Council.

“Through the adoption of sustainable building methods and low carbon technologies, as well as job creation, apprenticeships, and engagement with schools, the economic, social, and environmental impact of the development will be felt across the community for many years to come.

“We express our sincere thanks to the Council for their continued trust and support and look forward to progressing works in the weeks and months ahead.”

The project cost £23.7m and is supported by grant funding of £11.6m from the Scottish Government.
