History and Religious Studies pupils at Coltness High School have been researching key aspects of the Holocaust.

To mark World Holocaust Day, the pupils presented their findings to Provost Kenneth Duffy, members of staff, and fellow pupils.

The research projects encouraged pupils to remember those who were affected by the Holocaust, as well as those who have been affected by genocides around the world in the years before and since.

One pupil said: “It’s important that we learn the lessons of the past to avoid repeating them in the future.”

The pupils’ research projects included learning about individual people whose lives were affected by the Holocaust, including Kitty Hart-Moxon, Janusz Korczak, Anne Frank, and Jane Haining. Jane Haining was born in Dumfriesshire and was the only Scottish woman to die in Auschwitz.

Provost Kenneth Duffy said: “It was a privilege to hear the pupils speak so thoughtfully and with such detailed knowledge about some of the key individuals affected by the Holocaust. They showed a deep understanding of the importance of remembering the Holocaust and learning from history, so that future generations are committed to challenging hatred and injustice wherever it exists.

"My sincere thanks to the pupils and staff for their commitment to remembrance and education. Their  efforts help us honour history and build a future rooted in compassion, understanding and respect."

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place every year on 27 January.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust states that the day is “to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions more people murdered through the Nazi persecution of other groups and in the more recent genocides recognised by the UK Government”. These include the genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur
